SALT LAKE CITY — The award wins just keep coming for the Red Rocks.

Just three days after Utah won the inaugural Pac-12 regular-season championship, freshman Abby Paulson was named the Pac-12 Freshman of the Week.

The conference announced the news Wednesday afternoon, in recognition of Paulson’s meet-clinching beam routine — she earned a 9.95 — against No. 13 Washington on Sunday.

A native of Anoka, Minnesota, Paulson is tied for No. 9 nationally and No. 3 in the Pac-12 on balance beam. She has scored a 9.925 or better on beam in four of Utah’s last five meets, including a perfect 10 at UCLA. She has hit all 20 of her routines this season — she is a regular contributor on floor exercise and uneven bars — and has five event victories, second on the team behind only senior Kim Tessen.

“Abby is a stone cold hard worker, is extremely gifted, headstrong and was trained at the elite level by great coaches,” Utah head coach Tom Farden told the Deseret News. “It is natural for her to step into this arena and thrive.”

Paulson is the fourth Utah gymnast to be honored by the Pac-12 this season, joining Tessen (Specialist of the Week), Adrienne Randall (Specialist of the Week) and Maile O’Keefe (two-time Freshman of the Week).
