‘Take Me to the World’ will be a free, virtual concert that will air live on April 26
A virtual celebration is in the works for Stephen Sondheim’s 90th birthday, which will feature performances from some major Broadway stars, according to Variety.
“Take Me to the World” will be a free, virtual concert that will air live on April 26, which is the 50th anniversary of Sondheim’s Broadway production “Company,” Variety reported.
Raul Esparza, who starred in the 2006 revival of “Company,” will host the concert, according to Variety.
A variety of other stars are lined up to perform, including Audra McDonald, Kristin Chenoweth, Meryl Streep, Bernadette Peters, Mandy Patinkin, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Patti LuPone, and many others, according to Entertainment Weekly.
“The world is in a hard place, and we are all searching for something great. Well, Stephen Sondheim is greatness personified,” said Esparza in a statement, according to EW. “So, we’ve assembled a group of people who love Steve and have worked with Steve and have been inspired by Steve to sing his music and share some joy and some heartache together. We may be far from Broadway right now, but Broadway is never far from us.
The concert will also be a fundraiser for Artists Striving to End Poverty, an organization created by Mary-Mitchell Campbell, who will be the music director of the event, according to the New York Post. The organization works to transform the lives of young people through the arts.
“Take Me to the World: A Sondheim 90th Birthday Celebration” will stream at 8 p.m. ET on April 26 on Broadway.com and Broadway.com’s YouTube channel, according to Entertainment Weekly.
