Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp’s plan might hit a snag
Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp has called for movie theaters to reopen. But insiders believe most major movie theater chains won’t reopen anytime soon, Variety reports.
What’s happening:
- Kemp said movie theaters can begin to reopening beginning April 27 as a part of the overall reopening of businesses within the state.
- But insiders said movie theater companies can’t reopen so quickly. Insiders said it would take longer than a week to reopen major movie theater chains and to rehire staff. And the chains wouldn’t have a chance to learn new safety procedures, too, according to Variety.
- And, according to Variety, theater owners are considering the legal issues they could face if people visit their theaters and contract COVID-19.
- Experts are worried about “the lack of fresh content available to show on the big screen,” too, per Variety. Most Hollywood studios have delayed their blockbusters to next year or the fall, which means there wouldn’t be much fresh content.
- As I reported for the Deseret News, two major summer blockbusters — “Mulan” and “Wonder Woman 1984” — won’t it theaters until July 24 and Aug. 14, respectively.
Movie theaters are prepared to reopen
- Jeff Whipple, vice president of advertising, marketing and public relations for Megaplex Theaters, told me that movie theaters will be prepared when moviegoers are able return.
- “The experience Megaplex offers guests is unique — big picture, big sound, a shared experience,” he added. “There is something magical about that experience that guests can experience the Megaplex. And we know we’ve already heard from our guests who are anxious for us to get back to regular business operation as quickly as possible.”
