PROVO — A longstanding BYU basketball rivalry is continuing.
BYU and San Diego State announced Friday that the two programs have scheduled a home-and-home series the next two seasons.
The Cougars and Aztecs will square off on Dec. 1 at Viejas Arena. The two teams will meet again during the 2021-22 season at the Marriott Center.
Tipoff times and broadcast plans will be determined and announced later.
BYU and SDSU met last November in Provo, with the Aztecs earning a 76-71 victory. SDSU also beat the Cougars 90-81 in San Diego in December 2018.
Last season, SDSU finished No. 6 in the final Associated Press poll with a record of 30-2. The Aztecs claimed the Mountain West Conference regular-season title and were projected to get a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament before it was canceled due to the spread of COVID-19.
BYU, under first-year coach Mark Pope, ended up No. 18 in the AP poll and posted a 24-8 record. The Cougars were projected as a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The all-time series between the two schools dates back to 1940. BYU owns a 48-26 lead in the series.
BYU’s nonconference schedule for 2020-21 is in the process of being built.
The Cougars are scheduled to play in the Junkanoo Jam tournament on the island of Bimini in the Bahamas Nov. 17-21. The other teams in the round-robin tournament are Boston College, Tulsa and George Mason.
BYU will face Utah on Dec. 12 in Provo.
There are two other nonconference matchups that have been reported but not confirmed by BYU. According to reports, the Cougars will take on Arizona State on Dec. 19 at Talking Stick Resort Arena in Phoenix, Arizona. Another report says BYU will play Oregon in Portland, Oregon.
