Past memories keep comparing the coronavirus with all the other serious calamities of years gone by. I now believe this worldwide pandemic is the most dangerous of all. I can recall the difficult days of World War II up to the present. In between there were hurricanes, blizzards, 9/11 and a few others.
During World War II (1941-1945), families had to endure shortages and rationing which lasted for almost four years. Gas, food and other essentials were being rationed. The evenings were dark as windows were all black, and Air Raid wardens patrolled the streets enforcing the curfew. In spite of these restrictions, we still attended school every day, church on Sundays, movies and sporting events, and we occasionally dined out.
Today, we have stay-at-home requirements, no live sports or entertainment and no dining out. The infection and death rate from this virus is alarming — with no cure in sight. Also the lack of social- or work-related freedom makes this deadly disease rise to the top of my list. My hope and prayer is that a cure will be found soon so we may return to a new, near-normal life soon.
