Letter: Sen. Romney’s courage is reminiscent of his father

Letters to the Editor Deseret News

Sen. Mitt Romney is applauded for marching in the Black Lives Matter protest in Washington, D.C. Sen. Romney condemned the killing of George Floyd as “heinous murder.”

Sen. Romney’s courage is reminiscent of his father’s, Gov. George Romney. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting Gov. Romney during a school field trip to the Michigan state Capitol in Lansing. Gov. Romney welcomed each of us and our teacher so warmly. I remember Gov. Romney vividly, and deeply cherish meeting him and my conversation with him. He left a lasting impression as a kind and deeply caring human being.

Gov. Romney was a distinguished governor and was a man of impeccable integrity and principles. He was an exceptional leader who did not shirk from challenging situations, even when they were of a grave nature. During the 1967 summer race riots in Detroit, Gov. Romney drove into the heart of Detroit, met and talked with community leaders, walked the streets of Detroit and, through his presence and commitment to the people of the community, helped to broker peace in the city.

Today, as our nation faces the aftermath of the killing and murder of George Floyd, and must address the critical questions of what we, as a nation, must do to address the racial inequality and police brutality that plague our country, Sen. Romney must exercise the leadership skills, strong convictions and personal deep faith and conscience that he has shown as Utah’s senator.

Like Sen. Romney and his father, Gov. George Romney, let us together work hard and uphold the highest values of our beloved nation, for our children and grandchildren, and for all generations to come.
