Here’s an in-depth look at the West Jordan Jaguars football team heading into the 2020 season.
Note: West Jordan finished with a 5-6 overall record in 2019 and was third in Region 2 with a 4-2 record. It was RPI seed No. 15 in the 6A playoffs, and was eliminated by Jordan 20-17 in first round.
WEST JORDAN — You need to be a physical team to compete in Region 2, and armed with good returning experience on both sides of the ball, West Jordan looks primed for a successful season.
At least according to Jaguar football coach Carson Mund, who believes his team is in good position to improve off last season’s 5-6 mark and first round loss in the 6A state playoffs.
“You need good and big guys to compete in our region, and we really like what we have returning this year,” Mund said. “You throw in the return of our starting quarterback, and we feel we have the kids to become a good football team.”
Despite the move to the RPI ranking playoff seeding system, Mund is still intent on winning a region title, which he states as his team’s main goal.
“That should be everyone’s main goal, I feel. Getting that region championship should give you a high seed and then a first-round bye, which is big for any program. But the region is going to be tough. So we need to get through region play and then hopefully make a run in the playoffs.”

Coach Mund’s thoughts on how his players dealt the COVID-19 adversity in the spring and summer:
“The biggest thing I’ve noticed is how hard it is to manage, but we only have these kids for so long, so it’s about letting them know what’s important now. Kids have done well not doing things that are going to create havoc outside of the brotherhood we’re forming on the team. So we’re teaching them to be as responsible as possible, and they’ve largely responded. And our numbers have gotten better from when it first started. Kids are realizing it’s better to just go out and do what you can instead of staying quarantined. So that’s been positive.”

Coach Mund’s keys for offensive success in 2020:
“It’s the skill guys who get all the attention, but it’s the guys up front who really make an offense go, and we feel we have a real good offensive front. It’s also great having our quarterback return. He’s a great kid and a great leader for us. But if you were to ask me, the most important position on offense is the offensive line, and with all the returning starters we have there — it’s a good foundation to build around.”

Coach Mund’s keys for offensive success in 2020:
“The defensive line and our linebackers are going to be the strength of our entire team, not just on the defense, we feel. We’re going to ride as those guys ride. All six guys along our front our returning starters and all of them have really put in the time during the offseason to get bigger, faster and stronger.”
Deseret News outlook for 2020
It’s easy to buy what Coach Mund is selling when looking at the roster, and then comparing his team with others. The Jaguars should see improvements in 2020, armed with a strong front on both sides of the football, along with the return of starting quarterback Boston Farmer. It’s reasonable to expect West Jordan to finish near the top of Region 2, if not win the region outright.
