SANDY — It was widely thought heading into the NWSL Challenge Cup in Utah that the tournament would be wide open.
That proved to be the case, as the Houston Dash — a side few expected to make noise — claimed the title with a 2-0 win over the Chicago Red Stars on Sunday at Rio Tinto Stadium.
Sophie Schmidt’s penalty kick in the fourth minute after Kristie Mewis was fouled in the box gave the Dash the early edge, and then Shea Groom left no doubt in the first minute of second-half stoppage time.
Sunday’s game concluded a monthlong tournament that saw eight teams live in a “bubble” environment in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic.
The NWSL reported that no player or team personnel ever tested positive for the virus during the event.
