SALT LAKE CITY — The Human Society of Utah is offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of whoever set a cat on fire in Hildale.
The critically injured cat was found on Tuesday in the southern Utah border town when it wandered into a woman's yard, according to a prepared statement from the Humane Society.
“After taking the cat to a veterinarian in Hurricane, it was discovered that the cat had been tied up and set on fire. Additional open wounds indicated that the cat, now named Sterling, had been tortured,” the Humane Society stated.
“Hildale is known to be a tough spot for animals, but this level of cruelty should unnerve the community,” said Humane Society advocacy director Rachel Heatley. “In the interest of public safety, an individual who is capable of torturing an animal needs to be identified and taken off the street as soon as possible.”
The Colorado City Marshal’s Office is helping with the investigation into finding the person responsible.
Sterling was taken to a rescue organization in St. George.
