Saratoga Springs man dies in boating accident at Lake Powell

GLEN CANYON NATIONAL RECREATION AREA – A 46-year-old Saratoga Springs man died in an early morning boating accident on Lake Powell Tuesday.

At about 1:20 a.m., the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Dispatch Center received a call about a man who’d gone missing after his “wave boat” overturned when it hit a rock, according to a joint press release issued on Thursday afternoon from the Kane County Sheriff’s Office and the National Park Service.

Ryan Hall, 46, was part of a group of people camping overnight on a houseboat near the shoreline of Lake Powell in the Warm Creek area, which is in Kane County, the release said.

“It was reported the victim decided to take a wave boat out, the boat hit a rock next to camp and the boat flipped,” the release said. “A quick but unsuccessful search for the victim was conducted by Classic Air Medical. After daybreak, National Park Service rangers were dispatched and the search continued. The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Dive Team was deployed and the victim was recovered on July 28 in 12 feet of water.”

Kane County sheriff’s deputies and medical investigator conducted a death investigation, after which Hall’s body was taken to the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office in Salt Lake City for an autopsy, the release said. The incident remains under investigation by the Kane County Sheriff’s Office, Utah State Parks, National Park Service,and the Utah State Medical Examiner’s Office.

Officials cautioned those boating and recreating at Lake Powell to use caution, especially at night.
