SALT LAKE CITY — Utah confirmed 661 new COVID-19 cases on Saturday and one additional fatality, bringing the state’s death toll to 274.
Just over 6,000 tests for the novel coronavirus were reported Saturday, with a positive rate of 11%, according to the Utah Department of Health.
The latest death was a Davis County man between ages 65-84 who was a long-term care facility resident.
Saturday’s new cases follow a big increase on Friday, when the state reported 863 new cases, with six more deaths.
The spike pushes the seven-day rolling average to 615 cases, well above the 500-case average that Gov. Gary Herbert challenged Utahns to drop to by Aug. 1 — a week away. Earlier this month, Herbert said if the state doesn’t meet that goal, he could take “more aggressive action by the government” that could include a statewide mask mandate.
Total reported COVID-19 cases in the Beehive State are now 37,623 out of 500,139 people tested. About 94,000 of the state’s 594,012 total tests have been individuals receiving multiple tests. The rolling, seven-day average positivity rate was 9.2%.
Utah currently has 202 people hospitalized with the novel coronavirus.
About 24,300 of the state’s cases are considered recovered after passing the three-week point since their diagnoses.
