SALT LAKE CITY — One day after being named the preseason favorite to win the 2020 Big Sky Conference football crown, if there is a season, Weber State took home the top individual accolades as well.
The Wildcats had a league-high eight players named to the Big Sky preseason all-conference team released Friday during the league’s football virtual kickoff. Montana and Sacramento State followed with six players each on the preseason team, while Grizzlies linebacker Jace Lewis was named the Big Sky preseason defensive MVP and Eastern Washington quarterback Eric Barriere earned the offensive MVP honor.
“Weber State has to replace their quarterback obviously, but they have so much back,” Stats Perform FCS senior editor Craig Haley said during the online-only virtual kickoff. “(Wildcats head coach) Jay Hill has gotten them to another level. They’re one of the elite powers.”
Weber State placed four offensive players on the preseason all-conference team, including offensive linemen Ben Bos and Ty Whitworth, who was one of three unanimous selections on the 2020 team, as well as running back Josh Davis and fullback Clay Moss.
Rashid Shaheed was tabbed as the conference’s top punt returner.
Three Weber State defensive players also made the preseason team, including defensive linemen Jared Scheiss and George Tarlas, as well as cornerback Eddie Heckard.
Davis and Whitworth earned preseason second-team All-American honors from Hero Sports earlier this offseason, while Davis and Shaheed have previously taken home postseason All-America accolades.
All eight Weber State players are previous Big Sky all-conference honorees.
The Wildcats are coming off a historic 11-4 season, where they reached the Football Championship Subdivision playoff semifinals for the first time in school history.
“It seems like this is going to be Jay Hill’s best team he’s had at Weber State since taking over, and that’s scary to think about, considering they have a run of Big Sky titles here and have made deep playoff runs these last few years,” Hero Sports’ Sam Herder said during the virtual event.
