SALT LAKE CITY — Two Latter-day Saint missionaries are recovering in a Houston-area hospital after a man invaded their apartment at 4 a.m. on Sunday and stabbed both women, police and a church spokesmen said.
The missionaries, who are serving in the Texas Houston Mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, told Harris County Sheriff’s deputies they had never met the assailant.
Deputies took a suspect into custody when a crime scene investigator noticed a man matching the missionaries’ description watching police from the front gate of the apartment complex, according to a report published by KTRK, the ABC affiliate in Houston. Sgt. David Angstadt said police believe the suspect lives in the same apartment complex as the missionaries.
KHOU reported that the women were stabbed multiple times.
The affiliate posted a video report that showed the two missionaries being taken by stretchers to waiting ambulances.
“The young women were taken to the hospital and are expected to recover,” church spokesman Daniel Woodruff said. “We sincerely pray for them and their families as they deal with and heal from this ordeal. We are grateful for the medical workers and first responders who have been caring for the missionaries since this occurred.”
