Webber is the latest to criticize the movie adaptation of his Broadway musical
“Cats” received plenty of criticism from audiences and reviewers alike after the movie adaptation came to theaters in December. Now, the creator of the original Broadway musical is the latest to slam the movie.
Andrew Lloyd Webber talked about “Cats,” and the movie’s director Tom Hooper, in a recent interview with the U.K.’s Sunday Times.
“The problem with the film was that Tom Hooper decided, as he had with ‘Les Mis,’ that he didn’t want anybody involved in it who was involved in the original show,” Webber said in the interview, according to Entertainment Weekly. “The whole thing was ridiculous.”
Webber’s contributions to the film were “minimal,” according to USA Today. However, he did co-write a new song for the film with Taylor Swift, called “Beautiful Ghosts.”
Others who were involved in the film have also criticized it, including actor James Corden, who said that he hadn’t seen the movie but “heard it was terrible,” according to NBC News.
Despite the fact that the movie featured an all-star cast — including not just Corden and Swift but also Judi Dench, Idris Elba and Jennifer Hudson — the movie tanked at the box office after its release and lost $113 million for Universal Pictures, according to NBC.
