Liam Hone scored the final touchdown on Friday to lift the Bruins to a thrilling 21-20 win over the visiting Flyers.
OREM — Scoring a win in the final seconds is enough to thrill any football head coach.
But score that win against a team like Dixie, and it makes it all the more special.
Mountain View was down 20-14 to the Flyers late during Friday’s matchup, but rallied in dramatic fashion to score a 21-20 win which could well be considered a big one for Tyler Anderson’s team.
“It was a big one for us, no doubt,” Anderson said. “Dixie is always a top team and a team we were excited to play up here. Fortunately we pulled it out for what I think is going to be a good momentum-builder heading into region play. We told our kids all week how big of an opportunity it was for us to play Dixie, and they responded.”
Indeed the Flyers have been among the 4A classification’s best over recent years, regularly making it clear to the state semifinal and championship rounds played at Rice-Eccles Stadium.
As for how Mountain View ultimately pulled it out, it was running back Liam Hone falling into the end zone from two yards out with just 25 seconds left on the clock.
“We got a big pass and a roughing the passer penalty to set us up down there, and our quarterback made the right call for us to score,” Anderson said. “It’s obviously great to pull one out like that.”
The quarterback guiding the Bruins down the field was Kaden Kunz, who had to make do with just under two minutes left on the clock to take the win.
“He’s been great all year and has really settled into the starting quarterback job,” Anderson said. “He’s been real steady for us and we definitely saw that during that final drive.”
Anderson was also quick to credit his defensive linemen and linebackers for playing a big role in the win.
“They were able to hold Dixie out of the end zone a couple of times when they drove it down the field, and also made a big interception for us late,” Anderson said. “So a lot of credit goes to them, and I really think our defensive line has improved a lot to help us get to where we’re at.”
Where Mountain View is at currently is a 2-1 record and a string of winnable games in front of them, including several within a Region 10 that looks ripe for the taking.
“We’ve had some really tough injuries already, but kids have rebounded and we definitely like how things are going,” Anderson said. “We feel we can definitely compete for a region championship, and hopefully we don’t have any more big injuries, because that can always throw off a season. But overall I’m very happy with how our kids have responded and are playing right now.”
