In reference to Howard Stephenson’s op-ed of Aug. 10, criticizing UEA for technology-phobia is wrong (“COVID-19 has caused UEA to reevaluate its stance on innovation in schools”). They opposed gratuitous vendor/profit-driven technology for technology’s sake, not simply enhancing instruction with technology as another teaching tool.
Then, Sen. Stephenson singlehandedly dismantled the Electronic High School, a USOE-run school with a very low dollar-per-credit budget, a bargain for the taxpayers and sorely missed by high school councilors throughout the state. This encouraged the proliferation of for-profit online charter schools. Why profit-driven solutions?
Mr. Stephenson’s disdain for UEA stems from their leadership shining a light on his attempts to privatize Utah’s public schools, which would destroy educational opportunities for many, if not all, children.
