Letter: We wouldn’t have the United States without the Electoral College

Mr. Jacobson advocates the popular vote for the president of the United States (“Letter: The popular vote, not the Electoral College, should decide the election,” Aug. 21). I disagree. If we had the popular vote, only Los Angeles and New York, due to their population size and their political orientation, would choose the president of the United States.

We would not have the United States of America under the Constitution simply because the smaller northern states would not have ratified it, let alone come out of the Constitutional Convention.

The Electoral College prevents both the tyranny of the majority and the minority.
