Tony Finau qualifies for next week’s Tour Championship with sizzling 65 in BMW final round

SALT LAKE CITY — Even though he’s enjoyed a solid season on the PGA Tour, Tony Finau needed a good round Sunday at the BMW Championship in Illinois to move into the top 30 for the season and qualify for the Tour Championship for the fourth straight year.

The Utah native stood in 29th place in the FedEx standings and was in a tie for 15th place in the tournament heading into the final round. An over-par round would have dropped Finau out of the top 30, but he came through with a 5-under-par 65 and jumped to fifth place at 279, three strokes behind winner Jon Rahm, the only player to best Finau’s score, with a 64.

Finau jumped to No. 20 in the FedEx standings going into next week’s final tournament of the 2019-20 season, which will be played at East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta.

In Sunday’s round, Finau shot an even-par 35 on the front nine, but got hot on the back nine with birdies at 11, 12, 13, 14 and 18, where he hit his approach within three feet.

Finau will start next week’s tournament, which begins Friday and runs through Monday at 2-under-par, eight shots behind No. 1 Dustin Johnson. Finau finished seventh in the Tour Championship in both 2017 and 2019 and in a tie for 15th in 2018.
