This is in response to the letter from Roger Kidd from Fairview (“Letter: I’ll take a knee — for the flag, for those in uniform and for God“ Sep. 15). I respect Kidd’s invitation to take a knee for the national anthem. Of course, he has that right. But I also have a right to invite all my fellow citizens of our country to stand for the national anthem. I believe in being subject to the laws that govern the land. According to the 36 U.S. Code #301 titled “National Anthem,” “During a rendition of the national anthem when the flag is displayed ... persons present should face the flag and stand at attention with their right hand over the heart, and men not in uniform, if applicable, should remove their headdress with their right hand and hold it at the left shoulder, the hand being over the heart.”
Of course, the word “should” connotes a choice. I will always choose to follow the law until I can no longer stand at all. I invite all to stand for the national anthem to show respect for this blessed land that we have been given and do all we can to love one another.
