Tony Finau falls back with 73 in second round of U.S. Open

A rough second nine sent Tony Finau down the leaderboard at the U.S. Open Friday morning as he shot a 3-over 73 to finish the second round at 2-over 142, following his first-round 69 at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York.

That left the Utah native five shots behind Bryson DeChambeau, one of his playing partners, who eagled the final hole to finish with a 68 and a 3-under-par 137 total. First-day leader Justin Thomas, who shot 5-under 65 in the first round, had an afternoon tee time.

Finau played the back nine first and played it in 1-under with two birdies and a bogey. However, he struggled on front nine with bogeys at 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8 with a lone birdie at No. 7.

Finau should make the 36-hole cut, which is expected to come at around 4 over par as scores went up Friday under tougher conditions.

The other player with Utah connections, two-time State Amateur champion Preston Summerhays, is trying to make the cut after shooting a 72 in the opening round. He teed off in the afternoon and got off to a great start, hitting his approach at No. 1 within a foot for a birdie, but made a bogey at No. 2 and a par at No. 3.
