SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah student-athletes helped with storm cleanup over the past week, rendering volunteer service to help clear the campus of tree limbs and debris.
Last Friday, players from the men’s golf, men’s swimming and diving, women’s tennis and gymnastics teams assisted in the effort. On Monday, the tennis squad returned. The women’s soccer, women’s swimming and diving, baseball, lacrosse, women’s basketball and volleyball teams also participated.
Approximately 50 people participated — answering the volunteer call on short notice though an e-mail sent to teams through the Crimson Council, the university’s student-athlete advisory committee.
Kyndal Pond, Utah’s assistant director of personal development, credits the students for getting the word out and their teams involved.
“Sometimes it can be tough, but I think right now people are looking for things to do. Nobody’s technically competing,” Pond said as the Utes and Pac-12 are sidelined by the coronavirus pandemic. “So it was a really good opportunity for them to get together and do some service and give back.”

The two days of service took place exclusively on campus, which was hit hard by last week’s high winds. The athletes have been working closely with the Bennion Center (Utah’s service-oriented organization) with the gatherings. Other students and volunteers are also involved with the ongoing opportunities to assist. More cleanup projects are set for Tuesday.
Pond, who noted that the grounds crew at the university has been great to work with in terms of managing things, said it’s been good for the student-athletes to be back on campus after being away for so long.
“I think that it was a nice way to give back to our specific community,” Pond explained.
