Letter: How do we protect against our own poor judgment? Term limits

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., talks during the confirmation hearing for Supreme Court nominee Amy Coney Barrett before the Senate Judiciary Committee, Wednesday, Oct. 14, 2020, on Capitol Hill in Washington. Sasse has sponsored legislation that would impose term limits on senators. | Patrick Semansky, Associated Press

In our society we have enacted laws that became necessary to protect us from those among us who exercise poor judgment — for example, speed limits for people who drive recklessly too fast on our roads, as well as prohibitions against operating a motor vehicle while impaired or outlawing the dumping of toxic substances onto our land and into our water.

The current state of our national government begs for action against the pervasive exercise of poor judgment in the executive branch as well as in the legislative branch (by both major parties). Fortunately, the executive branch has a term limit. Congress, unfortunately, does not.

With a limit of one or two terms, those who are supposed to represent us would hopefully spend more time actually accomplishing important things rather than posturing in televised hearings and campaigning for the next election. Yes, we could vote them out, but we rarely do.

There are too many career politicians who exercise poor judgment by putting party before country. Let’s demand term limits and protect ourselves from ourselves.
