Letter: We need big government, not Trump, to combat climate change

Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Andrew Wheeler speaks as President Donald Trump stands nearby during an event about the environment in the East Room of the White House, Monday, July 8, 2019, in Washington. | Alex Brandon, Associated Press

I have become used to the things that surprised me when I moved to Utah. Now they are commonplace. I fear the same thing is happening to our perceptions of the environment. Hotter, dryer summers, drought (or major flooding), increased wildfires and the bad air they create are becoming normal.

Most of us agree global warming is a problem but are becoming complacent about its advance. It is urgent we respond to it, but we need massive government investment in green technologies and innovative ways to lessen the impact. We need a government to take the initiative to combat climate change.

Donald Trump’s record shows that rather than protecting the environment, he has opened more sites to oil and gas drilling, decreased environmental regulations and flouted global warming as a hoax. I believe his own EPA predicts some of his actions will increase deaths due to poor air quality. We cannot let him continue to destroy our world. Our children will suffer the most. Their health will be at risk because of dirty air, pesticides, polluted waterways and changing weather. This year, if nothing else, vote for the climate like your life depended on it — because it does.
