Utah State will alternate between home and away contests except for two consecutive home games on Nov. 28 and Dec. 5 against the New Mexico Lobos and Air Force Falcons, respectively.
Other opponents include the San Diego State Aztecs on Oct. 31 at home, the Nevada Wolf Pack Nov. 7 on the road, the Fresno State Bulldogs Nov. 14 at home and the Wyoming Cowboys Nov. 21 on the road.
The top two teams with the highest conference winning percentage will face off in the Mountain West Championship game on Saturday, Dec. 19. Traditionally, teams play in two divisions within the conference, but that will not be the case this year, although the Aggies will end up playing all five of their regular division foes (Boise State, Air Force, Wyoming, Colorado State and New Mexico).
Air Force, Boise State and San Diego State will not play eight conference games, but the remaining nine teams will.
“We are excited to get our student-athletes back on the football field this fall,” MWC commissioner Craig Thompson said in a statement. “The shift away from a two-division format was necessary to optimize the schedule and allow for maximum flexibility given the various constraints which had to be considered.
“Inasmuch as the season begins with an uneven number of conference games, and the possibility exists additional games may be lost to COVID-19 challenges, the procedures for determining the participants in and location for the MW Football Championship Game were adapted to accommodate a range of outcomes in as equitable a fashion as possible.”
Some games will end up being played on Thursdays and Fridays to accommodate conference TV partners CBS Sports and FOX Sports.
Kickoff times are to be determined.
When the season was postponed in August, Utah State had been picked to finish fourth in the conference’s Mountain Division behind Boise State, Wyoming and Air Force. The Aggies finished 7-6 last season.
