“Even at 38, I feel like I’m always changing and progressing,” the singer said.
For Kelly Clarkson, 2020 has been, to borrow her words, an “emotional rollercoaster” of a year.
The “American Idol” champion recently used her platform to express gratitude for the (sometimes difficult) life lessons that accompanied 2020’s unpredictable peaks and valleys.
Clarkson’s year included all-time highs including her first-ever daytime Daytime Emmy Award win as well as unimaginable lows, like her divorce from Brandon Blackstock who was her spouse for nearly seven years.
In a recent interview with Today, the singer-turned-TV-host described her divorce process as, “the worst thing ever for everyone involved.”
On Tuesday’s episode of her NBC talk show, Clarkson was tasked with completing the prompt: “I’m grateful in 2020 for the lesson I learned about…”
Her heartfelt response touched on personal growth, healthy support systems and empathy. She said, via Today:
“Even at 38, I feel like I’m always changing and progressing in a good sense, in a good way. And I always want to make sure I’m being the best version of myself. I think you are, you know, that thing my mom has been telling me since I was a kid, ‘You are who you surround yourself with.’
“You want to make sure you’re surrounded by people that also want to be the best version of themselves. And also want a good, common goal for everyone, not just themselves, right?
“I think that (some) people could be bad for you at a certain time...Everybody just goes like, “Oh, that means they are bad,” but no, it doesn’t necessarily mean that. It just means you are on different paths, and that’s okay.
“Everybody is on a different learning curve and everybody is learning something different at a different time.”
