SALT LAKE CITY — A man who had been out of jail for 17 days when he rammed a police car and stole a pizza delivery driver’s vehicle in an effort to escape was charged Wednesday.
Stephen Nolasco-Juarez, 20, was charged in 3rd District Court with aggravated robbery, a first-degree felony; two counts of assault on a police officer, and theft by receiving stolen property, both second-degree felonies; failing to respond to an officer’s signal to stop, a third-degree felony; possession of drug paraphernalia and reckless driving, both class B misdemeanors.
On Nov. 17, a West Valley police officer spotted a stolen vehicle driven by Juarez near 1950 W. 3500 South, according to charging documents. Two officers tried to box Juarez in with their patrol cars, but Juarez intentionally hit both of them trying to escape, the charges state.
Juarez fled on I-15 and exited onto Redwood Road. He parked his vehicle in a Domino’s Pizza lot and jumped into a delivery driver’s vehicle, the charges state. The driver told police that Juarez yelled at him to get out and kicked and pushed him until he exited his vehicle, according to the charges.
Juarez then drove over a grassy area and started heading the wrong way on Redwood Road, the charges state. He ran several red lights before eventually crashing into another car at Indiana Avenue, the charges state. Four people suffered injuries that were not considered life-threatening, according to police.
When he was arrested, Juarez said he had recently gotten out of jail and didn’t want to go back.
Prosecutors have requested Juarez be held in the Salt Lake County Jail on no bail.
