Watch how close Kyle Van Noy was to returning a fumble recovery for a touchdown

Kyle Van Noy has returned fumbles for touchdowns each of the past two seasons while a member of the New England Patriots.

The former BYU linebacker — now in his first season with the Miami Dolphins — almost accomplished the feat again Sunday, helping set up a touchdown for Miami in the Dolphins’ eventual 28-17 victory over the Los Angeles Rams.

With Los Angeles facing a 3rd-and-8 from its own 31 yard-line late in the second quarter, the Dolphins’ Shaq Lawson strip-sacked Rams quarterback Jared Goff. Van Noy picked up the loose ball at the Los Angeles 29, then weaved his way through a handful of Rams players near the sideline before finally being brought down at the 1-yard line by Malcolm Brown.

That set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Myles Gasin on the next play, giving Miami a 28-7 lead.

Van Noy had a strong day, finishing with nine tackles — including five solo stops — and a pair of pass deflections.

Miami, which had just 145 yards of total offense to 471 for Los Angeles, turned the momentum in the game by forcing four turnovers — two interceptions and two fumbles.

Former Utah safety Eric Rowe had one of those interceptions, picking off Goff on a promising Los Angeles drive less than two minutes before the Van Noy recovery. With the Rams facing a 2nd-and-9 at the Miami 27, Goff was hurried by Dolphins linebacker Jerome Baker and Goff threw a wobbly pass as Baker hit his arm. Rowe adjusted and made the interception, his first of the season.

Like Van Noy, Rowe had a standout day, finishing with seven tackles — including five solo stops — and five pass deflections. One deflection came on a fourth down and another on a third-down play in Miami territory that forced a field-goal attempt for Los Angeles.
