NEPHI — A Sandy couple was charged Wednesday with leading officers on a high-speed chase, all while an 8-month-old child and a lot of methamphetamine were in the vehicle.
Artemio Rivera Luna, 34, and Alexandrea Mykall Lovato, 31, are each charged in 4th District Court with drug possession with intent to distribute, a first-degree felony; failing to stop for police and child endangerment, third-degree felonies; plus marijuana possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, class B misdemeanors.
Just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, the couple was stopped for speeding on I-15 in Juab County. A Utah Highway Patrol trooper noticed drug paraphernalia in the car and Luna admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle, according to charing documents.
The trooper further discovered Lovato had warrants out for her arrest. A police K-9 was called to the scene and indicated that there were drugs in the vehicle, according to a police affidavit.
The trooper decided the car needed to be moved to the Juab County Sheriff’s Office to be searched due to weather conditions and the fact there was an 8-month-old child present.
“(The trooper) explained to them we would do it this way due to the heavy fog and freezing cold weather,” the affidavit states. The trooper ordered Luna to follow him to the sheriff’s office while another trooper followed behind him.
Instead, Luna drove away with speeds reaching 115 mph, the charges state. About 17 miles later, officers were able to spike the fleeing vehicle’s tires.
Luna got out of the car and ran through backyards and a field, the affidavit states. He was eventually captured in the town of Rocky Ridge in the northeast part of Juab County. Inside the vehicle, investigators found several ounces of marijuana plus 3 pounds of methamphetamine, the charges state.
The child was taken into protective state custody.
