The winter solstice is the astronomical moment when the sun reaches the Tropic of Capricorn, when those in the Northern Hemisphere experience the shortest day and longest night of the year in terms of daylight, according to the Farmers’ Almanac. Regardless of what the weather is doing outside, the solstice marks the official start of winter. Speaking of weather, KSL meteorologist Grant Weyman said a cold front will push into the Wasatch Front late Tuesday, bringing with it another round of snow.
