“You know you can’t believe everything you read online.”
“That’s fake news.”
“Anyone can say anything online.”
These are pretty common sayings to hear in our modern age. Any point can be shot down by muttering any one of these phrases, but are they really true? Are the things we see online actually less trustworthy than anything else, and are there any better sources? I believe the internet to be a very credible source, if only one knows where to look.
Today, we have access to the entirety of mankind’s knowledge literally at our fingertips with one of the world’s greatest advancements in technology: the smartphone. One Google search away is almost anything you could ever need to know, and that’s something anyone living in the 21st century relies on. Why then, do we discredit the internet so readily? While it is true that people can blaspheme anything they want into the void of social media, cross-referencing has also never been easier. Two clicks away is another article on the same exact search.
The internet is under the scrutiny of the entire world. If a person is well-versed in technology, the truth is easily found. To deny the internet’s credibility is to deny yourself knowledge. Don’t underestimate the power of a smart person with a smartphone.
