Letter: We don’t need an inauguration. We need day-one leadership

Gov.-elect Spencer Cox announces details of his transition plan during a press conference in the Gold Room at the Capitol in Salt Lake City on Thursday, Nov. 5, 2020. | Steve Griffin, Deseret News

Gov.-elect Spencer Cox will assume his role as governor at an inauguration event at the Tuacahn Amphitheater on Jan. 4, 2021. He claims that the event planning has included public health input.

Why take any risk at all? Per Alex Azar, Secretary of Health and Human Services, masks are only 72% effective when mask wearers are 6 feet apart. Therefore, there’s still significant risk. Robert Redfield, CDC director, claims that December, January and February will prove the darkest months since this pandemic started in the U.S.

The answer is easy: Hold a simple, intimate swearing-in event with members of the governor-elect’s household. Film the event. Then, immediately get to work. Future Gov. Cox will start his administration during one of the most demanding times for the state of Utah: people dying daily, businesses on the edge or failing, health care workers pushed beyond their limits, vaccine distribution either going well or failing, workers wondering if their employment will change the next day, etc. We don’t need an inauguration. We need a governor who will focus on the challenges that are escalating daily.

“Stay Safe, Stay Home” is the mantra offered by our political leaders. It’s a “do as I say, not what I do” approach, similar to California Gov. Gavin Newsom who doesn’t follow his own edicts.
