MAGNA — A Salt Lake man was arrested after police say he pointed a rifle at another man but claimed he wasn’t really going to rob him.
Awad Majok, 19, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail on Wednesday for investigation of aggravated robbery, aggravated kidnapping, possession of a firearm by a restricted person, drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.
On Nov. 21, Majok contacted a man on social media about buying a pair of shoes. When the seller drove to the meeting location in Magna, Majok “entered the vehicle’s back seat, produced a rifle from a black bag, pointed it at his neck and told him to drive,” according to a police booking affidavit.
The man drove to a nearby gas station where he parked and yelled for help. Majok got out of the car, but left his cellphone with a picture of himself on the phone’s home screen, the affidavit states.
Unified police said they were able to identify Majok through social media and found pictures of him displaying several firearms on his Facebook page.
On Wednesday, police went to his residence to interview him. Majok claimed he pointed a rifle at the other man so the man would not rob him, according to the affidavit.
Investigators served a search warrant on Majok’s apartment where “a semi-automatic, handgun, marijuana and drug paraphernalia were found,” the report says.
According to police, Majok is an associate of documented gang members.
“(Majok) and his associates are known to the Salt Lake Metro Gang Unit to be armed and violent. (He) has several social media posts showing him displaying firearms. If released, (Majok) will arm himself and continue in violent criminal activity,” police wrote in the affidavit.
In April, Majok was charged with aggravated robbery and accused of helping to rob a man of his gun at a TRAX station, according to court documents. The charge was later dismissed.
In November, he was charged with theft for allegedly possessing another man’s stolen gun.
