Aggies come up just short in wild finish that saw them nearly erase nine-point deficit in a minute

Utah State staged a comeback from down nine with a minute left but came up just short after Steven Ashworth’s tying 3-point attempt at the buzzer was blocked.

Here are three takeaways from the Aggies’ 59-56 loss to UNLV.

  • Incredibly, USU was able to climb back into the game after being down nine with 1:08 left in the contest. Marco Anthony made a pair of free throws to cut the Rebels’ lead to seven points, then stole the ball and fed Justin Bean for a layup to make it 57-52 with 58 seconds to go. This time, UNLV was able to beat the USU trap, but Nick Blake missed a wide-open dunk and Bean was fouled and knocked down two free throws to make it a three-point game with 30 seconds remaining. Blake travelled on the next possession and Anthony was fouled and made both free throws, bringing the Aggies within a point. Two made free throws by David Jenkins Jr. gave the Rebels a three-point lead, and Ashworth’s 3-pointer at the buzzer was blocked by Moses Wood.
  • UNLV’s 13 made 3-pointers were a season high for the Rebels.
  • Anthony led Utah State with 18 points, while Bean chipped in 10. Neemias Queta was held to single digits — eight points — for the first time in nine games.
