PARK CITY — The body of a Clinton man buried while snowboarding in a popular backcountry area in Summit County that is also notorious for avalanches, was recovered on Friday.
“It is with great sadness we report that the 31-year-old male has been located and died in the avalanche. Our most sincere condolences go to the family, girlfriend and friends,” Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez said on Twitter.
Summit County search and rescue crews had spent most of the day searching for the man who was buried in an avalanche in the Dutch Draw area near the Canyons Ski Resort, according to the sheriff’s office.
The slide happened just after 10 a.m. and was witnessed by the man’s girlfriend.
She said she witnessed her boyfriend attempt to snowboard down the steep backcountry terrain. “The man triggered an avalanche — unfortunately, he was caught in the avalanche,” according to a prepared statement from the sheriff’s office.
The Park City Mountain Ski Patrol, Utah Department of Public Safety helicopter, Park City Fire District, and University of Utah AirMed helicopter all participated in the search and recovery effort.
“At 2:29 p.m. rescuers, with the help of a Park City Mountain Ski Patrol avalanche dog, located the male at the toe of the avalanche, approximately 2 feet below the surface. The avalanche was estimated to be 50 feet wide with a 200-foot vertical drop,” the sheriff's office stated.
The name of the snowboarder was not immediately released.
Dutch Draw is a popular area for snowboarders and skiers, but has also been the scene of several fatal avalanches, including in 2019 and 2005.
