Letter: Burgess Owens must reverse course and disavow Trump

Burgess Owens must step up now to disavow President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn our election. The votes have been counted, recounted and litigated with the same result: Joseph Biden is the choice of the American people. The fact that our current president disagrees with the result does not matter. What does matter is that Rep. Owens honor the Constitution to which he just swore allegiance. Former Congressman Ben McAdams graciously conceded when he lost to Mr. Owens. As a 4th District constituent, I expect Mr. Owens to urge Mr. Trump to do the same.

The new congressman’s Twitter feed features a quote by Ronald Reagan: “Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction.” By supporting Trump’s efforts to interfere in our elections, Mr. Burgess is pouring accelerant on the demise of our democracy.
