AMERICAN FORK — A Provo man who allegedly told police that he has a “problem” of contacting girls and lying about his age has been arrested and accused of abusing a 13-year-old girl.
Ryan Clifton, 31, was booked into the Utah County Jail on Tuesday for investigation of aggravated sexual abuse of a child and sodomy on a child.
On Jan. 16, police say a 13-year-old girl met up with Clifton, whom she had met on social media. Clifton drove the girl to a parking lot and sexually abused her, according to a police affidavit.
After the girl returned home, police were notified that family members found messages sent on Instagram between the girl and Clifton that were sexual in nature, the affidavit states.
“Ryan tells the victim he is 18 years old and then lies again and tells her he is 21. It was found that Ryan is actually 31 years old and more than double the age of the victim,” police wrote in the affidavit.
When questioned by police, Clifton admitted to having child pornography on his phone, according to the affidavit.
“Ryan had met the victim online and stated to me he has multiple conversations like this with other females online. Ryan had stated to me he has a problem about lying about his age when speaking with females online. I feel it would be unsafe for Ryan to be released and potentially hurt another juvenile, or attempt contact with the victim in this case,” police wrote in the report.
