Utah reports 5,042 new COVID-19 cases, 25 more deaths for Friday and Saturday

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah health officials reported a cumulative 5,042 new COVID-19 cases for New Year’s Day and Saturday, as well as 25 additional deaths.

Of the total new cases, 3,110 would have been reported on Friday if not for the holiday, and 1,932 on Saturday, according to the Utah Department of Health. The new cases were confirmed out of 14,900 people tested.

As expected, the state’s case counts and positive test rate have continued rising since the Christmas holiday.

The rolling seven-day average for new cases is now 2,506 per day, and the average for percent of positive laboratory tests is 27.4%. One week earlier on Dec. 26, the state’s rolling daily average cases stood at 2,153 cases, and the positive test rate was 24%.

Just under 24,000 health care workers have received their first vaccine doses in Utah. More than 127,000 vaccine doses have been shipped to the state so far.

On Saturday, 487 patients were hospitalized with the disease in Utah. Intensive care units across the state were 85.3% full of coronavirus patients and others, and referral ICUs that can treat more serious patients were 88.3% full.

Utah has now confirmed 281,654 cases out of 1.74 million people tested and 2.69 million tests given since the pandemic began. Hospitalizations with the disease since the pandemic started now total 11,101.

To date, 1,294 Utahns have died with the coronavirus. The latest deaths were:
