Series: The Red Rocks lead the all-time series 65-0 (22-0 in Salt Lake City). Arizona is one of two teams in the Pac-12 that have never beaten Utah. Last season, the Red Rocks defeated the GymCats in Tucson 197.300-195.975, after posting season highs on every event.
The stakes
For Utah: The Red Rocks are looking to course correct after a disappointing showing against No. 2 Oklahoma. Ranked No. 3 in the country after Week 1, Utah fell to No. 6 after posting a score of 196.550 against the Sooners, the Red Rocks’ lowest meet score since the 2020 season opener against Kentucky (196.425)
For Arizona: The GymCats open their season Saturday against Utah. Arizona was ranked No. 24 in the WCGA preseason poll, after finishing last year ranked No. 27, which was their highest end of season ranking since 2017. Coincidentally, Arizona has not won its season opener since 2017.
The gymnasts
For Utah: Three Red Rocks were honored by the Pac-12 Conference for their efforts against Oklahoma. Sophomore Maile O’Keefe was named Pac-12 Gymnast of the Week, while senior Sydney Soloski was named Specialist of the Week and sophomore Jaedyn Rucker was named Coaches Choice. O’Keefe is one of two Utah gymnasts who have competed in the all-around this season, along with junior Cristal Isa.
For Arizona: The GymCats have one of the largest and youngest rosters in the Pac-12, with 22 total gymnasts, including eight freshmen. Leading Arizona are junior Kennedi Davis and sophomore Malia Hargrove, both of whom have competed on vault, beam and floor in their collegiate careers.
Next up
The Red Rocks are scheduled to host Washington in a rematch of the meet that decided the 2020 Pac-12 regular season championship. Utah has never lost to Washington — the Red Rocks hold a 61-0-2 (16-0-2 in Seattle) edge all-time over the GymDawgs — and has won 17 consecutive meets in the series.
