Zack Englebright played a key role in Summit Academy’s strong week to end the regular season, including an upset of No. 1 Grantsville.

Against Grantsville, Englebright scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds as the Bears prevailed 42-41. Two nights later 49-44 win over Morgan he scored 13 points as Summit Academy finished the regular season 10-12.

Englebright missed several weeks of the preseason, but since returning he’s averaged 21.1 points in 14 games this season (3^rd in 3A). He’s scored 955 career points for Summit Academy, which is the new school record.

“Zack has always been an outstanding scorer, however, this year he has really improved his all-around game, particularly in terms of the leadership on and off the court he has provided,” said Summit Academy coach Jeff Baird. “Zack is a fearless competitor who will do whatever it takes to help his team win, whether it’s taking over the game late with his scoring like he did in a win at South Summit, where he had 28, or helping his team in other ways like he did on senior night in a win over Morgan where he had 14 rebounds, three assists and took a charge.”

Baird maintains a 3.5 GPA in the classroom.

Maddie Warren, Lehi basketball

Lehi has vaulted to the top spot in the 4A rankings heading into the final week of the regular season, and the consistent contribution of senior Maddie Warren has been the catalyst.

Last week in a big 66-48 region win over Timpview she recorded 18 points and nine rebounds, and two nights later she scored 17 points and grabbed seven more rebounds in a 52-36 win over Mountain View.

“Maddie brings so much to our team that’s hard to measure. Her stats are great. She fills up the stat sheet. But beyond that, and more importantly, her leadership has been incredible,” said Lehi coach Sean Seastrand. “She’s a great teammate. She brings her 100% best every single day to practice. She makes the other girls on our team better with her leadership. She’s a 4-year starter and has built a legacy here at Lehi along with her sister Macie that is unforgettable.”

Warren is averaging 13.5 points and 4.3 rebounds this season for the 17-3 Pioneers.

Max Cannon had a superb state meet last week at the South Davis Rec Center, winning two individual races and setting a new 4A state record in the process.

Cannon won the 100 butterfly with a strong time of 51.75, and then later in the 4A state meet swam a record-setting 56.68 in the 100 breaststroke.

“Over the summer because of COVID I wasn’t able to train for like three or four months. Coming back into it, I talked to coach and said I think 100 breast I can drop some time. We just did a lot of heavy technique stuff,” said Cannon.

He kept gradually dropping time throughout the season, and then peaked the right time at state, with another year to lower it further next year.

Jenna Gibbons, Sky View swimming

Capped her senior season in near-perfect fashion at the 4A state meet last week, winning one individual event and leading Sky View to the 4A state championship.

“It’s so good that we got to finish the season cause I knew we were going to have a lot of potential this year. It’s really exciting to see how far our team has come,” said Gibbons.

Gibbons won the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:05.54, missing out on the school record by just a tenth of a second.

She finished second in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:02.47.

Her time in the 100 breaststroke is the second-best mark in the entire state this season.

“She had an amazing meet,” said Sky View coach Marcus Singleton.

Cort Raddon, Beaver (Sr.)

Cort Raddon, Beaver wrestling

Played a key role last weekend in leading Beaver to its first wrestling state championship in the 83-year history of wrestling in Utah.

Beaver edged Millard by 12.5 points, and senior 170-pounder Cort Raddon was a major reason why as he was one of Beaver’s two individual state champs. He added valuable points along the way as well with three pins and a technical fall in the state championship.

He finished the COVID-shorted season with a 16-2 record. At the 2A duels, 2A divisionals and 2A state, nobody scored a point against Raddon.

“His wrestling style was what made him so strong. No one wanted to pick down because he was so good at riding and pinning people,” said Beaver coach Robbie Bradshaw.

Anya Hatch, Copper Hills (So.)

Anya Hatch, Copper Hills wrestling

Anya Hatch wrapped up a perfect season at the inaugural 6A girls wrestling state tournament at Westlake High School on Monday.

Hatch recorded a first-round pin in all three of her 170-pound matches, including a pin 30 seconds into her championship match as the Grizzlies finished the state tournament in second place behind Westlake.

She finished the season with a perfect 38-0 record.
