Boys Basketball

Trei Rockhill, Crimson Cliffs (Sr.)

Trei Rockhill’s consistency all season, not to mention a buzzer beater against rival Desert Hills last week, have lifted Crimson Cliffs right into the thick of the Region 9 standings as the season hits the home stretch.

Rockhill is averaging 17.3 ppg to lead the Mustangs, and last week against Desert Hills he hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer in the 69-67 win.

“Trei has been fantastic all season long. He has been a great leader and his production on the court has been fun to watch,” said Crimson Cliffs coach Kasey Winters.

His 17.3 ppg ranks eighth in 4A this year, while his 3.7 3-pointers per game leads 4A.

“He also has been very solid defensively guarding some of the best players in Region 9 and in the state. Trei has worked extremely hard over the past couple years and deserves to be recognized for his efforts on the court. Having him hit the game winner against Desert Hills was a perfect ending. It was against his old school in a cross town rivalry game, doesn’t get much better,” said Winters.

Girls Basketball

Kayla Jackson, Springville (Sr.)

With four games left in the regular season, 5A No. 1 Springville is looking like one of the teams to beat as it continues to rally behind senior Kayla Jackson.

Jackson leads the team in scoring averaging 13.2 ppg, and she’s also second on the team in steals and third in rebounding and assists.

“Kayla is one of the hardest working players I have ever seen. She is always putting time in the gym and looking for ways to improve her game. Her hard work has really paid off. She has become a great scorer and defender. She has become a great leader for this team,” said Springville coach Holli Averett.

Last week in a 59-27 win over Payson, Jackson led the way with 20 points on three 3-pointers. Earlier this year against Payson she scored a career-high 24 points.

Boys Swimming

Jaeger Roberts, Timpview (Sr.)

Timpview edged Alta last week to win the Region 7 swimming championship, and one of the subtle reasons why according to coach Jefferson McClain was the contagious energy of senior Jaeger Roberts.

“Jaeger has stepped up, both in and out of the water, as one of our team captains this year. His hard work is paying off as he continues to drop times in his events. He helps his teammates have a fun experience while challenging them to do their best. His drive and determination to succeed are contagious,” said Timpview coach Jefferson McClain.

Roberts also racked up some important team points in the pool. He swam the second leg of Timpview’s runner-up 400 freestyle relay team, and then he placed sixth at region in the 100 free with a time of 53.09.

Girls Swimming

Jamie Horne, Kearns (Jr.)

This Kearns junior played an integral role in leading the Cougars to the Region 2 championship last week.

In addition to finishing first in her two individual events, the 50 and 100 freestyles, she also swam the anchor leg in Kearns’ to winning 200 medley relay team. Her relay team in the 400 free relay finished second.

“What makes Jamie a strong swimmer is her dedication. She works very hard in practice and at lifting weights. Her mom worked with her a lot individually when she was little and developed her stroke into a very efficient stroke,” said Kearns coach Christopher Horne.

Jamie Horne’s time of 24.94 in the 50 free at region ranks as the eighth fastest swim in that event this season across the state. Her 100 free time of 55.24 ranks in the top 20.

Boys Wrestling

Drew Lang, West (Jr.)

It was been a dominant junior season for West’s Drew Lang, who will march into the 6A state tournament as the wrestler to beat at 132 pounds.

Lang improved to 32-1 on at the 6A Divisionals last week with a perfect 5-0 record. He won two matches by fall, two by technical fall, and then he beat Westlake’s Jacob Finlinson in the final 4-2.

Lang’s only loss of the season was a 4-3 decision to Juab’s Channing Warner at the Utah All-Star Duals back in January.

Lang is currently ranked as the No. 8 wrestler in Utah on the Beehive Top 20 at wrestleutah.com.

Girls Wrestling

Celeste Detoles, Westlake (Fr.)

In her first season wrestling at the high school level, Westlake freshman Celeste Detoles is having a huge impact.

Detoles heads into next Monday’s 6A state tournament with a 23-1 record at 120 pounds, and she’ll be the favorite.

“She’s very humble and hardworking. She is willing to spend the extra time to get better. She is simply amazing,” said Westlake coach Cody Burdett.

She participated in the Utah All-Star Duals back in January and beat Copper Hills’ Brooklyn Pace in her match 4-2.
