Game at a glance

It’s one of the most anticipated quarterback matchups ever in a Super Bowl. 2018 NFL MVP and Super Bowl LIV MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs will take on three-time MVP and six-time Super Bowl champion Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Kansas City found ways to win all season, losing just one game with its starters. Kansas City beat Cleveland and Buffalo to win the AFC championship for the second consecutive season.

Tampa Bay was 7-5 following a Nov. 29 loss to the Chiefs, but reeled off four straight wins to close the regular season. The Bucs beat Washington, New Orleans and Green Bay in the playoffs en route to becoming the first team to host a Super Bowl.

Crystal ball

Kansas City will win if … Mahomes is Mahomes. In his three seasons as a starter, Mahomes has proved that the Chiefs are never out of a game. With Mahomes, the Chiefs have never lost a game by more than one possession, and the trend should continue in the Super Bowl. Kansas City’s offense is the best in the NFL, accounting for 415 yards per game. Travis Kelce, Tyreek Hill and Clyde Edwards-Helaire are valuable weapons for Mahomes and the Chiefs’ offense. The biggest concern for the Chiefs on offense will be replacing starting offensive linemen Eric Fisher and Mitchell Schwartz, who are out.

Kansas CIty’s defense — top five in the NFL — will have to make things hard for Brady.

Tampa Bay will win if … the Bucs are able to stop the Chiefs offense. It's hard to win in a shootout with Kansas City, so Tampa Bay will have to make Mahomes uncomfortable and sack him regularly. The Buccaneers’ pass rush is one of the best in the league going against a Chiefs offensive line with two starters out. Jason Pierre-Paul and Shaquil Barrett, combine for an average of five sacks per game.

If the Buccaneers are able to slow down the Chiefs’ offense, Brady and Tampa Bay’s offense will take over. Brady is the postseason passing leader, with 860 yards, and with Rob Gronkowski, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin, Tampa Bay’s offense is potent.

Players to watch

Patrick Mahomes: Mahomes threw for 4,740 yards, 38 touchdowns with six interceptions in the regular season and 580 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions in the postseason.

Tom Brady: Brady threw for 4,633 yards, 40 touchdowns with 12 interceptions in the regular season and 860 yards, seven touchdowns and three interceptions in the postseason.
