EAST CARBON CITY, Carbon County — An 11-year-old died in an early morning fire Sunday in an East Carbon home, the Wellington Fire Department reported.
Wellington firefighters were called to Carson Street at 1:47 a.m. Sunday, the department wrote in a Facebook post. Firefighters learned while on their way that “the home was fully involved with heavy flame and smoke showing.”
When they got there at 2:11 a.m., crews found “heavy smoke and fire” and began fighting the fire from outside.
“During these efforts, firefighters were notified there was possibly a child still inside,” the department said. “A rescue operation was immediately enacted but due to the extreme heat and smoke inside the home, command relayed to the rescue team this was likely a recovery operation.”
After going inside the home through a bedroom window, firefighters found the trapped 11-year-old, brought the child outside the burning home, and loaded the child into a waiting ambulance.
“Unfortunately everyone’s worst fears were confirmed and the victim’s injuries were unsurvivable,” the department posted. “Please keep the victim’s family and friends in your thoughts and prayers along with the first responders in this unimaginable tragedy.”
While the East Carbon Fire Department confirmed the child was 11 years old, officials did not identify the victim as of Sunday night.
