5 takeaways from the second day of the NCAA Tournament

The Indiana Farmers Coliseum scoreboard goes dark after a first round NCAA college basketball tournament game between Iowa and Grand Canyon Saturday, March 20, 2021, in Indianapolis. The VCU Oregon game scheduled to be played after the Iowa Grand Canyon game was cancelled after VCU was pulled from the NCAA Tournament because of COVID-19 protocols. The second day of the NCAA Tournament featured big upsets by Abilene Christian and Ohio, a canceled game due to COVID-19 and the Pac-12 going undefeated. BYU lost to UCLA in the first round, and Gonzaga showed the nation why they are the best in the NCAA.

The second day of action at the NCAA Tournament has concluded. The round of 64 — full of excitement — has wrapped up, with the round of 32 set to take place on Sunday and Monday.

The second day of the Big Dance featured big upsets by Abilene Christian and Ohio, a canceled game due to COVID-19 and the Pac-12 going undefeated. BYU lost to UCLA in the first round and Gonzaga showed the nation why they are the best in the NCAA.

First (and hopefully last) tournament game canceled due to COVID-19

VCU’s Josh Banks, right, drives the baseline past St. Bonaventure’s Dominick Welch during the second half of an NCAA college basketball championship game for the Atlantic Ten Conference tournament Sunday, March 14, 2021, in Dayton, Ohio.

Hours before tipoff of Oregon and VCU, the game was canceled due to COVID-19 issues within the VCU program. As a result, VCU had to forfeit the game, ending its season, and Oregon advanced to the Round of 32 without playing a minute of game action.

To be able to participate in the tournament, teams had to have no positive COVID-19 results for a week straight prior to arrival in Indiana.

A source told CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander that VCU had its first positive COVID result on Wednesday, followed by two more on Friday. The NCAA decided that it was too risky to move forward with the VCU-Oregon game.

You have to feel for VCU, which worked hard throughout the season to get to the tournament, only to not be able to play. Hopefully it is the only game canceled for the rest of the tournament.

All five Pac-12 teams advance to the second round

Colorado forward Jabari Walker (12) celebrates a three-point basket against Georgetown in the first half of a first-round game in the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Saturday, March 20, 2021.

The Pac-12 had a great opening round of the tournament, sending all five teams to the second round.

No. 5 Colorado started Saturday’s action with a resounding 96-73 win over No. 12-seeded Georgetown. The Buffaloes ran away with it in the first half, outscoring the Hoyas 47-23 in the first period for a 96-73 win. Four Colorado players scored in double figures, with Jabari Walker leading the way with 24 points off of the bench. The Buffaloes move on and will face No. 4-seeded Florida State.

No. 6 USC survived a scare from No. 11 Drake to win 72-56 and advance to play No. 3-seeded Kansas. The Trojans led by just three at halftime but held the Bulldogs to just 19 points in the second half to advance. The Mobley brothers were fantastic, with Evan scoring 17 points and Isaiah scoring 15 to lead USC.

Though No. 7 Oregon didn’t play against VCU, it did move on to the Round of 32, and it counts. The Ducks will take on No. 2 Iowa

No. 11 UCLA upset No. 6 BYU 73-62 to put a bow on the night for the Pac-12.

Add in No. 12 Oregon State’s 70-56 upset win over No. 5 Tennessee on Friday, and it was an impressive two days for the conference.

BYU falls in first round

BYU guard Brandon Averette (4) reaches for a rebound with UCLA forward Kenneth Nwuba (14) and BYU forward Caleb Lohner, second from left, and BYU forward Matt Haarms (3) during the second half of a first-round game in the NCAA college basketball tournament at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Saturday, March 20, 2021.

In its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2015, No. 6 BYU fell to No. 11 UCLA 73-62.

Though Matt Haarms got to double-digits in the closing minutes of the contest, for much of the game it was a two-man show — guards Alex Barcello and Brandon Averette scored 35 of BYU’s 62 points. Haarms, Barcello and Averette didn’t get much help from anyone on offense in the second half — the rest of the Cougars scored just seven combined points during the final period.

UCLA’s slow pace meant that the Cougars needed to value every single possession.

BYU’s 10 turnovers, coupled with an uncharacteristic poor shooting night from 3-point range — the Cougars shot just 17.6% from deep — spelled disappointment.

Johnny Juzang scored 27 to pace the Bruins, who have had nice wins over Michigan State and the Cougars to earn their way into the second round.

It’s a disappointing end to the season for the Cougars, who lost just five games in the regular season and were ranked 23rd in the AP Top 25 poll before the NCAA Tournament began.

Abilene Christian, Ohio score best upsets of the day

Abilene Christian players celebrate their 53-52 upset win over Texas in a college basketball game in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis Sunday, March 21, 2021.

What an incredible end to the first round.

No. 14 Abilene Christian’s upset of No. 3 Texas is why March Madness is the best.

The Wildcats just became a Division I program in 2013. What a great job head coach Joe Golding has done building this program. Abilene Christian went 11-20 in its first season as a Division I program, but gradually improved every year. They made the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history in 2019, losing to Kentucky in the first round, but turned in a fantastic performance this year, beating the Longhorns 53-52 for their first NCAA Tournament win.

Abilene Christian is the best in the nation in forcing turnovers and showed that on Saturday, forcing 23 Texas turnovers. The Wildcats also held Texas without a field goal from 4:45 in the second half until 16 seconds remained in the game.

The Wildcats held a 51-47 lead with 1:17 left in the game, but fouled the Longhorns’ Andrew Jones, who made it a two-point game. A turnover by Reggie Miller led to a 3-pointer by Jones, giving Texas a one-point lead with 16 seconds left.

On the final play of the game, Abilene Christian’s Damien Daniels drove to the bucket, but missed the layup. Joe Pleasant was there to collect the offensive rebound and was fouled with two seconds left.

Pleasant, a 58% free-throw shooter on the season, made both free throws to send the Wildcats to the second round and a matchup with No. 11 UCLA.

In 2018, UMBC made history by becoming the first 16 seed in NCAA history to beat a No. 1 seed by not just beating Virginia, but blowing them out by 20 points.

Virginia got its revenge the following season by winning the championship in 2019, but found itself on the wrong side of another first-round upset in the 2021 edition of March Madness.

Ohio players celebrate on the court after defeating Virginia in a first-round game in the NCAA men’s college basketball tournament, Saturday, March 20, 2021, at Assembly Hall in Bloomington, Ind.

No. 13 Ohio knocked off No. 4 Virginia 62-58 on Saturday. The Cavaliers led 38-31 early in the second half, but the Bobcats went on an 18-4 run to take the lead. Ohio led 58-51 with 44 seconds left, but before it could start celebrating, Virginia closed the gap to three points with two Jay Huff layups. Ohio’s Mark Sears calmly made two free throws to extend the lead and Lunden McDay made the clinching free throws for the Bobcats.

Ben Vander Plas had a game-high 17 points for Ohio.

No. 10 Maryland beat No. 7 UConn thanks to a game-high 23 points from Eric Ayala.

No. 11 UCLA upset No. 6 BYU behind 25 points from Johnny Juzang.

No. 12 UC Santa Barbra nearly had an upset over No. 5 Creighton, but the Bluejays eked out a 63-62 win thanks to Christian Bishop’s free throws at the end of the game.

Gonzaga shows why it’s the favorite to win the title

 Paul Sancya, Associated Press
Gonzaga forward Corey Kispert reacts to hitting a basket against Norfolk State during the first half of a men’s college basketball game in the first round of the NCAA tournament at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Saturday, March 20, 2021.

To no one’s surprise, Gonzaga had a great performance against No. 16 Norfolk State in the Bulldogs’ tournament opener.

The No. 1 overall seed nearly broke 100 points, beating the Spartans 98-55.

One of the best players in the country, Corey Kispert had 23 points, including 15 in the first half, to lead Gonzaga. Anton Watson had 17 points and Joel Ayayi had 15 points, with Drew Timme adding 10.

The Bulldogs held the Spartans to just 30.6% shooting and Gonzaga put up the most points of the tournament so far. Gonzaga, still undefeated, looks like the favorite to win the whole thing.
