Coronavirus: Utah responds to the pandemic

Utah has seen 371,979 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1,949 total deaths as of Tuesday, according to the Utah Department of Health. That’s an increase of 487 cases from Monday. Nine additional deaths were reported.

Here are the latest numbers.

• Total number of COVID-19 cases: 371,979
• Total reported people tested: 2,214,506
• Vaccines administered: 741,297
• Total COVID-19 hospitalizations: 14,753
• Current COVID-19 hospitalizations: 213
• Total COVID-19 deaths: 1,949
• Single-day high for reported cases: 4,672 (Dec. 31)
• Single-day high for reported deaths: 30 (Dec. 17 and Jan. 21)

Recently

• One year ago Sunday, Utah received its first patient with COVID-19.

“I had no idea we’d still be doing this a year later,” Mark Jorgensen said, adding that he initially expected the novel SARS-CoV-2 strain would act “more like another swine flu or bird flu.”

• While another nearly 20,000 Utahns received doses of the COVID-19 vaccine Friday, an error in the registration process at Vaccinate.Utah.Gov is causing a hiccup in the process.
• As many as half of Utahns may now have immunity against COVID-19, a top doctor at the region’s largest health care system said.
• Utahns 16 and older with certain medical conditions can now be vaccinated against COVID-19, Gov. Spencer Cox announced Thursday.
• Utah’s COVID-19 vaccine shipments that were delayed last week due to winter storms nationwide should be caught up by Thursday, and state officials are hoping the federal government’s allotment of first doses soon will increase by more than 50% with the expected approval of a new vaccine.
• A new statewide health order in effect through March 25 would no longer make wearing masks mandatory in counties designated as having low COVID-19 transmission rates once the state’s allocation of vaccine reaches some four times the current level.

Worldwide

Globally, the novel coronavirus pandemic has now infected 114,140,104 and killed 2,535,520 people as of Tuesday, according to the World Health Organization.
