The senior is batting .500 through seven games (10 for 20) with six home run and 13 RBI. She’s also been walked four times and been hit twice.
“Katie is a hard worker, dependable, and has high expectations for herself and the team. Because of this, Katie’s helps and encourages her teammates to do their best both at practice and on the field,” said Manti coach Susan Hatch.
Larsen homered in each of Manti’s wins last week over Carbon and Cedar City.
Baseball
Nolan Miller, Salem Hills (So.)
Salem Hills was victorious on three consecutive days last week against Fremont, Alta and Bountiful, and sophomore Nolan Miller impressively played a large role in all three wins for the top-ranked Skyhawks.
Miller went a combined 8 for 10 from the free throw line with four RBI, and he also picked up the victory in a two-inning relief appearance in the 4-3 win over Bountiful.
“Nolan loves the game. A fast, strong player who will only get better over time,” said Salem Hills coach Scott Haney.
Miller went 4 for 4 in the Bountiful win, and then against Fremont he went 2 for 3 with two double and three RBI.
Boys Soccer
Preston Larson, Weber (Sr.)
Through four games, Weber is the only 6A team that hasn’t given up a goal yet, and at the heart of that defensive dominance is center back Preston Larson.
Last week Weber blanked Weber 1-0 and then Roy 2-0 to improve to 4-0.
“Preston leads by example. He’s very coachable and a team player and great captain,” said Weber coach Jan Swift.
Larson also has an assist this season playing out of the back.
Boys Lacrosse
Garrett Haas, Lone Peak (Sr.)
Lone Peak’s lacrosse team improved to 2-2 with a pair of wins last week, and Ohio State commit Garrett Haas has been one of the focal points for the Knights.
Through four games he’s record 30 goals and eight assists, which included 13 goals in the 16-15 overtime win over Brighton.
“Garrett is a player at a different level. His work ethic and dedication to the game is amazing. In the offseason you can find Garrett at the field early in the morning and late at night working tirelessly to perfect his game. He comes early and stays late for practice,” said Lone Peak coach Bruce Tucker. “In our overtime win against Brighton we were drawing up a play where we had a couple picks off ball. Garrett calmy looked at us coaches and said ‘Give me the ball I got this’ and the rest is history he isolated his player at X and scored the goal. It was like a movie. He had practiced that shot 10,000 times before.”
This is Haas’ first year playing lacrosse in Utah as he played his first three high school season in Texas.
Girls Lacrosse
Brooklyn Suttlemyre, Syracuse (Jr.)
Syracuse’s girls track team continued its perfect start to the season last week, and the steady play of junior Brooklyn Suttlemyre was a big key why.
Last Tuesday in a 19-3 win over Northridge Suttlemyre recorded 10 goals and two assists. Three days later in a thrilling 11-10 victory over Fremont she added nine more goals and an assist.
“Brooklyn has gotten our team off to a spectacular start on the year. She has been a powerful force for our team both on the draw and as an attack player. She is an awesome student and a great lacrosse player,” said Syracuse coach Adam Suttlemyre. “Her desire to help our program grow is a direct link to her being a first-year program. She is a captain on our team and the QB for our offense. Part of what makes Brooklyn good as a teammate is she tries to vocalize individually what other players are doing well to help our team and she then tries to motivate them to build on that.”
In three games this season Suttlemyre has scored 24 goals and added three assists.
Boys Track
Spencer Carlile, Dixie (Sr.)
Senior Spencer Carlile made quite an impression at his first big meet of the season at the Snow Canyon Invitational last week.
Carlisle won both the 110 and 300 hurdles in convincing fashion, posting times that certainly gives him a shot at state records as the season progresses.
Carlile won the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.48 and the 300 hurdles with a time of 37.73. Both times were faster than anything any athlete from the 2019 season ran.
Carlisle won the 300 hurdles as a sophomore at the 2019 state meet and finished fourth in the 100 hurdles.
Girls Track
Brielle Davis, Copper Hills (Jr.)
As a freshman two years ago Brielle Davis burst onto the track scene in pole vault and posted the third-best mark in the state. She was denied a chance to build on that freshman season because of COVID-19 last year, but just one week into her junior season and she’s already established herself as the best pole vaulter in state history
Davis cleared 12’09 at the Davis Super Meet last week, beating the previous state record of 12’03 set by Orem’s Lauren Merrill back in 2019.
Boys Tennis
Chase Staker, Timpanogos (Sr.)
The first singles player for Timpanogos, Chase Staker had a strong weekend of matches at the St. George Invitational last week.
Timpanogos coach Jason Brown said he’s been impressed by how much work Staker has put in since last season was cut short because of COVID-19, and the extra work was obvious down in St. George.
“Although every match wasn’t a win where game scores were concerned, Chase’s mental game far outstripped his opponents with whom he stood toe to toe with despite their many more years of experience and personal coaching,” said Brown. “Chase Staker really stands to excel this season, and I say that with honest conviction.”
Girls Golf
Savannah Romney, Corner Canyon (Sr.)
Savannah Romney has waited to years to try and build upon her strong sophomore goal season, and she’s finally getting that chance.
In Corner Canyon’s first match since of 2021 back on March 10, Romney shot a 78 at Mountain View Golf Course to finish tied for second. The Chargers have two more matches this week as Romney will try and build off that inaugural performance.
“Savannah Romney has been a huge part of Corner Canyon Girls Golf since she was a freshman. As a senior, she has taken the role of a leader on the team. She continues to push the girls both on the course and off. Savannah tied for second scoring 78 at the first tournament of the season,” said Corner Canyon coach Lexi Gagon.
At state two years ago Romney finished tied for fifth shooting a pair of 79s at The Ridge Golf Course in West Valley City, where Corner Canyon finished second behind Timpview in 5A.
