VINEYARD — An SUV that police say was fleeing from officers after hitting a FedEx truck plummeted 20 to 25 feet off of a bridge in Vineyard on Thursday and burst into flames after hitting the ground.
Two Orem police officers who had been following the SUV pulled the driver, believed to be a man in his 30s, out of the burning vehicle, said Utah County Sheriff’s Sgt. Spencer Cannon. Another officer moved his patrol car between the burning vehicle and the victim who was being treated by officers to prevent the flames from spreading to them.
The man was taken to a local hospital and was not believed to be in life-threatening condition, Cannon said.
The incident began about 8:45 a.m. in Provo when police spotted a vehicle that witnesses said was driving erratically, he said. The SUV fled from police, but officers did not give chase.
A short time later in Orem, the SUV hit a FedEx truck, Cannon said. Just before 9 a.m. the the vehicle was spotted by a sheriff’s deputy in Vineyard.
As the SUV tried to get away from the deputy, it drove across a recently completed overpass on Vineyard’s Center Street just west of Geneva Road, lost control for an unknown reason and went over the side of the bridge, dropping to the railroad tracks below, Cannon said.
Police were investigating whether impairment was as factor in the crash, he said.
