High school boys basketball: 6A, 4A, 2A All-Stars cap COVID-19 crazy season with all-star game victories

HOLLADAY — A week after the NBA All-Stars put on on offensive show, the Utah High School All-Stars did the same thing Friday night at Olympus High School.

The three winning teams in the Utah Basketball Coaches Association senior All-Star games all scored at least 145 points, with all six teams breaking 100.

The largest classification in all three games prevailed, with the 6A, 4A and 2A All-Stars winning comfortably.

In the nightcap at Olympus, the 6A All-Stars beat the 5A All-Stars 148-140 as they pulled away with a 46-36 advantage in the fourth quarter.

The game began fairly competitively with both teams trying to get stops defensively, but when fatigue inevitably set in during the second half, stops became fewer and fewer.

The 6A All-Stars were led in scoring by Corner Canyon’s Carter Welling and Skyridge’s Duncan Reid, who each scored 25 points in the win.

The 6A All-stars made 21 3-pointers while the 5A All-Stars were pretty cold from behind the arc, only making 14.

Timpanogos’ Jackson Holcombe led the 5A All-Stars with 22 points, with Alta’s Jaden Brownell adding 21.

In the second game of the day at Olympus, the notion that defense is optional in all-star games was never more apparent than in the 4A All-Stars’ 171-136 victory over the 3A All-Stars.

The 4A squad scored 48 points in the first quarter and then 48 again in the third in a dominating victory.

Logan’s Jadin Penigar led all scorers with 40 points on a staggering 12 3-pointers. Tooele’s Justin Rogers added 28 points for 4A.

The 3A squad was led by Summit Academy’s Zack Englebright, who led his team with 30 points on eight 3-pointers.

In the first game of the day, the Class 2A All-Stars dominated from the opening tip on its way to the easy 145-102 victory.

Led by 29 points from North Summit’s Quinton Jones and 24 from Draper APA’s Tyson Chow, the 2A All-Stars jumped all over the 1A squad with a 36-20 lead after the first quarter. It proceeded to outscore 1A all four quarters.

Wendover’s Jaime Montalvo led the 1A All-Stars with 18 points, with all of his points coming on 3-pointers.
