The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has announced the creation of a new temple reopening phase — Phase 2-B.
This new phase allows a temple baptistry to open for small groups, specifically members with a limited-use temple recommend, according to a church statement.
“We are grateful for this opportunity for more members to participate in temple ordinances,” President Russell M. Nelson said in the statement. The church president also posted a photo and message on social media.
The new phase comes as the church continues to adjust temple operations based on government regulations brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, three temples in South America have paused and a fourth has resumed Phase 2 operations.
Members living in the districts of temples in Phase 3 and Phase 2-B can start scheduling appointments at temples.ChurchofJesusChrist.org a week before the reopening date.
“We encourage small groups — including new members, families, Aaronic Priesthood quorums, Young Women classes and young adult groups — to schedule a time to be in the temple,” said Elder David A. Bednar, who leads the Church’s Temple and Family History Council. “We are thrilled at the ability to provide these sacred ordinances to our deceased ancestors again, and for members of the church to again worship in the house of the Lord.”
We have been blessed in recent months to slowly reopen temples across the globe. Today, I am grateful to announce that temple baptistries will soon be open for small groups in 14 temples worldwide.

The following 14 temples will begin operating in Phase 2-B as early as March 29:
- Asunción, Paraguay
- Bern, Switzerland
- Calgary, Alberta
- Copenhagen, Denmark
- Córdoba, Argentina
- Edmonton, Alberta
- Frankfurt, Germany
- Guayaquil, Ecuador
- Kansas City, Missouri
- Manila, Philippines
- Medford, Oregon
- Portland, Oregon
- Seattle, Washington
- Twin Falls, Idaho
Church leaders hope to reopen more baptistries soon.
“We look forward to this phase and every phase of temple reopening with great anticipation,” Elder Bednar said. “We also want to be sure that we continue to open temples in a careful, responsible way. For this reason, temple openings in some areas may continue to lag behind the opening of public or community facilities.”
The Curitiba Brazil Temple has resumed operations in Phase 2, which means open for all living ordinances.
The following three temples, which were in Phase 2, have paused due to local pandemic conditions:
- Campinas Brazil Temple
- Santiago Chile Temple
- São Paulo Brazil Temple
Latter-day Saint temples, which were closed on March 25, began reopening on May 11 under a four-phase approach.
The Church’s lone temple still closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic is the Kyiv Ukraine Temple.
The list of reopened temples currently includes 159 of the church’s 168 dedicated temples worldwide. As of March 22, there will be 10 temples in Phase 1, 122 temples in Phase 2, 19 in Phase 3, eight that are paused, one still closed for COVID-19 and eight closed for major renovations.

- Phase 3 — All living and limited proxy ordinances by appointment
- Phase 4 — All normal operations
The church has created a document to track the progress of each temple.
Correction: An earlier version incorrectly stated all temples closed on May 25. They closed on March 25.
