Like Congressman John Curtis, I am concerned about the dangerous proliferation of misinformation on today’s social media platforms. It has the potential to mislead massive audiences into believing untruths and acting dangerously. However, as someone also concerned about government overreach, I fear that Congress is too easily relying on the heavy hand of government regulation to solve this problem.

Many members of Congress have talked about the need for reform to Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act of 1996. However, aggressive government regulation and enforcement will only heighten the barriers to enter the tech market. Startups will find it increasingly harder to compete against the very tech giants that our elected leaders are seeking to regulate.

Curtis has consistently voiced his support for free-market solutions, particularly with regard to the internet. While misinformation needs to be addressed, I strongly urge him to oppose any overbearing, anti-free market proposals that would substantially limit opportunities for smaller competitors and that would impose burdensome limitations on free speech.
