Former BYU and Corner Canyon star Zach Wilson is heading to New York.
Zach Wilson is heading to the Big Apple.
The New York Jets selected the former BYU and Corner Canyon High star quarterback with the second overall pick of the 2021 NFL draft. Wilson is expected to start in his rookie season for the Jets, as New York traded quarterback Sam Darnold to the Carolina Panthers, clearing the way for Wilson.
“These guys need a good quarterback, a good leader, and I think I’ve got those qualities. I can’t wait to go in there. I love the coaching staff, I love everything they have to offer, and I can’t wait to get to New York City,” Wilson said.
Wilson was the second quarterback picked in the draft, behind Clemson’s Trevor Lawrence, who was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the No. 1 pick.
A three-year starter for BYU, Wilson vaulted up the draft board thanks to his stellar 2020 season. Wilson led the Cougars to a 11-1 record that included a bowl win over UCF, with the Cougars finishing the season ranked No. 11 in the final AP poll.
“Wilson played in a pistol-heavy offense that featured full-field reads and mostly pro-style concepts. His best trait is his ability to extend plays, and he does a good job of adjusting his arm angle to generate throwing windows,” ESPN’s Steve Muench wrote. “What also stands out: Wilson’s ability to throw receivers open and his touch working against zone looks.”
Wilson was one of the most accurate quarterbacks in the nation, throwing for 3,692 yards with a 73.5% completion percentage and tossing 33 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He also rushed for 254 yards and 10 touchdowns.
